Lyrics

LOVE OF MY LIFE

Verse1
You think the truth is gonna hurt me
So you tell another lie
Truth is my heart's immune to hurting
My eyes have no tears left to cry

Chorus
I overlook your indiscretions
And your infidelities
When I look into the mirror
I'm not the girl I used to be

You're still the love of my life

Verse 2
From the humblest of beginnings
You were destined to go far
Around the world adored by millions
You soon became the star that you are

Chorus
I overlook your indiscretions
And your infidelities
When I look into the mirror
I'm not the girl I used to be

Bridge
Our love is unconventional
Fraught with compromise
Too many love affairs...so many lies
Though my heart still longs for you
It's time to say goodbye
Don't you cry...don't you cry
I'll never stop loving you

INSTRUMENTAL

Verse 3
As you're led into temptation
I light another cigarette
And wallow in the loneliness
Amid the spoils of your success

Chorus
I overlook your indiscretions
And your infidelities
I let you have your freedom
But I'll never set you free

You're still the love of my life

Story behind the song:

Tom Jones fell in love with Linda when he was 8 years old. They started going out in their very early teens and got married when Tom was 17 and Linda 16 as she was pregnant with their only child, Mark.  She endured complications and couldn't have any more children.
When Tom was 25 he was signed up but was asked to pretend he was 22 and single.  Linda, and 8 year old Mark, had to hide in the background until Tom was more established - I personally think this was at the root of Linda's problems.
As the years went by Tom had many affairs - he said in later years that he and Linda had "an understanding".  Whenever he was asked about Linda he'd say "she is the love of my life - the only one I've ever been in love with - she means the world to me - the rest is just fun and games."
I believe he truly loved her.

Linda became a virtual recluse - she shunned the showbiz life and very few people were allowed to visit their home.  She was a chain smoker who had emphysema. She also suffered from depression.  She hated how she looked and eventually wouldn't even allow a hairdresser into the house.
Tom's workload meant he was rarely at home but he phoned Linda every day and always placed her photo on his bedside table, wherever he was in the world.  He said that during these calls they were transported back in time and that they flirted and laughed like teenagers again.
It's a sad story and normally I'd hate a man who behaved in that way, but I believe Tom loved Linda deeply -  and that she knew it.  I also believe she had a strong hold over him too - re the line near the end of the song 'I let you have your freedom but I'll never set you free.'
Most men in the position Tom was in would have divorced and moved on - like many of his peers.

Linda passed away in 2016 with Tom by her bedside - he was devastated.
This song is arranged in live band vibe and is similar in style to Lady Gagga's 'I'll Never Love Again' from the film 'A Star Is Born'.
